Meaning of the Chinese Character 愛
The Love Chinese Wall Hanging is the third tapestry crochet pattern of the Faith, Hope, Love Crochet Wall Hanging collection.
The Chinese character 愛 (ài) is a symbol of love, affection, and compassion. It is a complex character that combines the radicals for “heart” (心) and “to walk” (夂) to convey the idea that love is not just a feeling, but also requires action and commitment.
In Chinese culture, the character 愛 has a long and rich history. It has been used in poetry, literature, and art for centuries, and it is often associated with the Confucian concept of ren (仁), which is translated as “benevolence” or “humanity.” Ren emphasizes the importance of treating others with kindness, compassion, and respect, and the character 愛 is a key component of this philosophy.
In addition to its cultural significance, the character 愛 has also been embraced by people around the world as a symbol of love and unity. It is often used in tattoos, jewelry, and other forms of art, and it has become a popular motif in contemporary Chinese design.
Despite its popularity and widespread use, the character 愛 remains a deeply personal and meaningful symbol of love for many people. It is a reminder of the power of love to connect us to one another, to overcome barriers and obstacles, and to inspire us to be our best selves.
Biblical Meaning of Love
In the Bible, love is often defined as a selfless, sacrificial, and unconditional commitment to the well-being of others. Love is not merely an emotion or feeling, but a deliberate choice and action.
The Bible teaches that love originates from God, who is the source of all love. In 1 John 4:7-8, it says, “Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.”
Biblical love is characterized by humility, kindness, patience, forgiveness, and generosity. In 1 Corinthians 13, often referred to as the “love chapter,” it says, “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.”
In summary, the biblical meaning of love is a selfless, sacrificial, and unconditional commitment to the well-being of others, rooted in the love of God. It is characterized by humility, kindness, patience, forgiveness, and generosity, and it is demonstrated in both our words and actions. Biblical love is the ultimate expression of our faith in God and our love for others.

If this is your first time coming across a tapestry crochet project, I have a series of Tapestry Crochet Tutorial that I would suggest you check out before you start this project. The tutorial provides simple patterns for you to practice as well. The type of tapestry crochet that I used for the Love Chinese Wall Hanging is the one that I called Two-Directional Flat Tapestry Crochet.
To work on this pattern, you will need:
- Love Chinese Wall Hanging crochet pattern by Haven Crochet Designs
- Caron One Pound yarn (this is a thicker #4 worsted weight yarn; 454g/16oz, 742m/812yds per ball)
- Main Color – approx. 228 yds
- Contrast Color – approx. 87 yds
- 5mm crochet hook
- Yarn needle
- (1) 3/16” x 18” wood dowel
- (1) 3/8” x 24” wood dowel
- Blocking mat, pins, spray bottle with water
The finished project measures approximately 19” x 19” (without top dowel).
- Feel free to use a 4mm crochet hook if you wish the end product to be a bit smaller. Using a smaller crochet hook is a good alternative for tapestry crochet beginners.
- If you follow the pattern instructions as it is, you can easily convert the wall hanging into a pillowcase by crocheting a back panel and stitching the two panels together. It should fit a 20″ x 20″ pillow insert without a problem.
