Home Chinese Pillow Cover – Crochet Pattern

“Home is a place you grow up wanting to leave, and grow old wanting to get back to.”

– John Ed Pearce

The Home Chinese Pillow Cover is advanced beginner crochet pattern worked with the tapestry crochet technique.

The Chinese character 家 (jiā) has a long history and complex origin. The character is composed of two parts, 宀 (mián) and 豕 (shǐ), which together represent the idea of a pig under a roof. The pig under the roof suggests a household or a family, as in ancient China, people would often keep pigs inside their homes for warmth and food.

Over time, the character evolved to represent the idea of a home or a family unit, and it became associated with the concept of kinship and social hierarchy. In Confucianism, the family was seen as the basic unit of society, and the character 家 came to symbolize the importance of filial piety, respect for elders, and the maintenance of social order and harmony.

The character 家 also has a phonetic component, which indicates its pronunciation. In ancient times, it was pronounced *kra, which evolved into jiā in modern Chinese.

Overall, the character 家 reflects the importance of the family in Chinese culture and the idea of the home as a place of warmth, security, and love.

The Home Chinese Pillow Cover is an advanced beginner tapestry crochet pattern. The front panel of the cover is the one that carries the design of the word, while the back panel is made up of a solid color.

The pattern comes with a printable version of the graph, which is broken up into two pages. You’ll need to tape the pages together to form the full design before starting the project.

If this is your first time coming across a tapestry crochet project, I have a series of Tapestry Crochet Tutorial that I would suggest you check out before you start this project. The tutorial provides simple patterns for you to practice as well. The type of tapestry crochet that I used for the Double Happiness Pillow Cover is the one that I called Two-Directional Flat Tapestry Crochet.

To work on this pattern, you will need:

The pillow cover will fit a 20″ x 20″ pillow insert for a snug fit, or an 18″ x 18″ pillow insert for a loose fit.
