Faith is the bird that feels the light when the dawn is still dark.

INTRODUCTION
Background Story
The Faith Chinese Wall Hanging crochet pattern was my first Chinese calligraphy crochet pattern ever and with it I launched Haven Crochet Designs. At the time, I was in love with the tapestry crochet technique and thought that it would be cool to blend my Chinese upbringing with crochet. Along with the Hope Chinese Wall Hanging and Love Chinese Wall Hanging, they make up my Faith, Hope, Love Wall Hangings Collection.
Those of you who follow me on social media probably know that I have a language background and that I like to read. I used to work as a translator before becoming a stay-at-home-mom. So naturally, words in the form of art are part of my daily life, and when I decided to start this crochet side hustle, crocheting words was something that I almost did instinctively.
The Faith Chinese Wall Hanging is available for FREE when you sign up for my newsletter, or you can purchase the pattern at a discounted price here. The Hope and Love wall hangings can be purchased separately on both my Etsy or Ravelry shops. Alternatively, you can purchase all three patterns together at a discounted price by clicking here.

Meaning of the Chinese Character 信
The Chinese character 信 (xìn) has an interesting origin that can be traced back to ancient times when the character was created as an ideogram. The character is made up of two parts: the left part 人 (rén) means “person” or “human”, and the right part 言 (yán) means “words” or “speech”.
The original meaning of the character 信 was related to sincerity and truthfulness. The character represented a person’s true feelings and thoughts, which they expressed through their words. The combination of 人 and 言 indicates that when people speak, they should be honest and sincere, and their words should reflect their true feelings.
Another explanation says that 信 (xìn) is composed of two parts: the radical 人 (rén), which means “person,” and the phonetic 辛 (xīn), which sounds similar to 信.
The radical 人 suggests that trust is a human quality and is based on interpersonal relationships. The phonetic component 辛 originally referred to the plant known as the prickly ash, which has sharp thorns and a pungent taste. In the context of the character 信, 辛 may represent the idea that trust can be a painful experience, like being pricked by thorns or tasting something bitter.
In modern usage, the character 信 can be used to indicate different meanings depending on the context. As a verb, it can mean “to believe,” “to trust,” or “to have faith.” As a noun, it can refer to “trust,” “faith,” “belief,” or “credibility.” For example, 信任 (xìn rèn) means “to trust and appoint,” and 信念 (xìn niàn) means “belief” or “conviction.”
In Chinese culture, the concept of trust and faith is highly valued, and the character 信 is often used in moral and ethical contexts. It is believed that trust is the foundation of all human relationships, and that faith is essential for personal and spiritual growth. The character 信 is also used in the context of religion and spirituality, where it represents a deep and unwavering trust in a higher power or divine being.
Biblical Meaning of Faith
In the Bible, the term “faith” is used to describe a person’s trust and confidence in God, based on their belief in His character and promises. One of the key verses that explains the biblical meaning of faith is found in Hebrews 11:1, which says, “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” This passage highlights the fact that faith involves trusting in something that is not immediately visible or tangible, but that is nonetheless real and certain.
Another important aspect of the biblical meaning of faith is the concept of obedience. In James 2:17, it says, “So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.” This passage emphasizes that faith must be accompanied by actions that demonstrate a person’s commitment to God and willingness to obey His commands.
