Double Happiness Pillow Cover – Crochet Pattern

“When you share your happiness, it gets doubled; when you share your worries, it gets halved.”

INTRODUCTION

The Double Happiness Pillow Cover is a crochet pattern worked with the tapestry crochet technique. The Chinese character 囍 (xǐ) is a symbol of double happiness, often used in traditional Chinese weddings to represent the union of two people in marriage. It is made up of two identical characters 喜 (xǐ) placed side by side, which means “happiness” or “joy” in Chinese.

The character 囍 has a long history and is considered to be a highly auspicious symbol in Chinese culture. It is believed to bring good luck, happiness, and prosperity to the newlywed couple. In Chinese culture, marriage is considered a highly significant and auspicious event, and the union of two individuals is believed to bring good fortune and blessings to their families. In addition to being used in wedding ceremonies, the character 囍 can also be found on various decorative items, such as red lanterns, banners, and wedding invitations.

The Double Happiness Pillow Cover crochet pattern presented here is inspired by this tradition and it gives the crocheter the opportunity to make either a pillow cover or a wall hanging. Although the colors traditionally associated with this symbol are red, white, gold, and black, it was refreshing to see other combinations during the testing process of this pattern.

PATTERN DETAILS

The Double Happiness Pillow Cover is an advanced beginner tapestry crochet pattern. The front panel of the cover is the one that carries the design of the symbol, while the back panel is made up of a solid color. However, I’ve had a tester make the symbol as well for the back panel but with the colors inverted, and the result was amazing! If you are not a fan of making pillow covers, there is an option to convert the front panel into a wall hanging as well!

A printable and a digital version of the graph are provided. For those of you who would like to print, the graph of this pattern is broken up into two pages. You’ll need to tape the pages together to form the full design before starting the project. For those of you who prefer to see the graph on your computer or tablet, a one-page digital version is provided. I recommend zooming in on the graph so you can see the grids comfortably.

If this is your first time coming across a tapestry crochet project, I have a series of Tapestry Crochet Tutorial that I would suggest you check out before you start this project. The tutorial provides simple patterns for you to practice as well. The type of tapestry crochet that I used for the Double Happiness Pillow Cover is the one that I called Two-Directional Flat Tapestry Crochet.
