“In the midst of movement and chaos, keep stillness inside of you.”
– Deepak Chopra
INTRODUCTION
Crocheting can be a therapeutic activity that not only helps us relax but also helps us channel our emotions and find peace within ourselves. This was certainly the case when I was going through a difficult time in my life and decided to create the Be Still Chinese Wall Hanging crochet pattern.
At the time, I was going through a lot of turmoil in my personal life. I felt lost and overwhelmed, and I didn’t know where to turn. But then I realized that I needed to find strength in quietness and trust in God. That’s when the idea for the Be Still Chinese Wall Hanging came to me.
I wanted to create something that would serve as a reminder to myself and others to be still and find peace within ourselves. I chose the Chinese character 靜 as the centerpiece of the wall hanging because it symbolizes the power of quietness and the importance of finding stillness in our busy lives.
As I worked on the pattern, I found myself getting lost in the rhythm of the stitches. The repetitive motion of the crochet hook was soothing and meditative, and it allowed me to quiet my mind and focus on the present moment. With each stitch, I felt my stress and worries melting away.
As I completed the pattern, I felt a sense of accomplishment and pride. The finished product was not just a beautiful work of art, but also a symbol of strength and resilience in the face of adversity. It reminded me that by trusting in God, I could find peace and stillness even in the midst of chaos and turmoil.
Meaning of the Chinese Character 靜
The Chinese character 靜 (jìng) means calm, quiet, still, tranquil, and peaceful. Its origin can be traced back to the ancient oracle bone script. The earliest form of the character 靜 depicted a person with both arms extended, symbolizing the attitude of calmness and relaxation.
Over time, the character 靜 has undergone several changes in its shape and form. The current form 静 is composed of two parts: the left part is 青 (qīng), which means blue or green, and the right part is 爭 (zhēng), which means two people competing for a single item. Combined, the character suggests that others may fight over worldly things, but one should look up at the blue sky and seek peace within themselves.
In Chinese culture, the character 靜 is often associated with the concept of Zen Buddhism, which emphasizes the practice of meditation and mindfulness to achieve inner peace and tranquility.
